This mouthwash has the ADA Seal of Acceptance to stand behind its effectiveness and safety. Because it contains alcohol, it does burn slightly, and the Freshburst minty flavor is on the stronger side. But the alcohol and bright mint are also great for freshening breath, allowing this mouthwash to do double duty. This can lead to gas, bloating and diarrhea. However, your body seems to adjust very well to xylitol.
Xylitol is mostly safe, especially if taken in amounts found in food. The FDA has approved xylitol as a food additive or sweetener.
When should you use it?
When you consume food and drinks that are high in sugar, acids accumulate in the mouth and cause the plaque pH to drop below 5.5. The acidic environment reduces the saturation of phosphate and hydroxyl ions in the mouth and dissolves tooth minerals. Xylitol-containing chewing gum increases the production of saliva, which helps with remineralization. Since oral bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus need an acidic environment to thrive, the non-acidic nature of xylitol prevents their growth (along with plaque formation). 6 Mouth rinses are widely used as an adjunct to maintain oral hygiene. It is important for these products to be effective and safe for regular use in children. Mouth rinses are recommended only for those who have the ability to swish and expectorate without swallowing.
